Naturopathy
Whole-person care rooted in natural approaches.
What it is
Naturopathic medicine is a system that combines a range of practices, nutrition, herbal medicine, lifestyle counseling, homeopathy, and sometimes acupuncture or manipulation, under a philosophy of supporting the body's innate healing ability. Licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs) complete four-year graduate programs, but licensing and scope of practice vary significantly by state. Some NDs can prescribe medications in certain states; others cannot.
What the evidence says
Naturopathy is a mixed bag evidentially because it encompasses so many practices. The nutritional and lifestyle components align well with mainstream evidence. Some herbal medicines have solid clinical evidence. But naturopathy also includes homeopathy, which has no plausible mechanism and is not supported by clinical trial evidence. Evaluating a naturopath requires looking at which specific practices they use, not just the title. Some high-quality studies on naturopathic care for cardiovascular risk reduction show promise.
What a first session looks like
First visits are typically 60-90 minutes and very comprehensive. Expect questions about diet, sleep, stress, environmental exposures, family history, and current symptoms. The practitioner may use physical examination alongside detailed health history. Treatment plans often include dietary recommendations, supplements, and lifestyle changes.
