Functional Medicine
Finding causes, not just managing symptoms.
What it is
Functional medicine is an approach that tries to identify the underlying causes of chronic disease rather than treating symptoms in isolation. Practitioners take very detailed health histories, run extensive lab work, and consider the interconnectedness of body systems, genetics, environment, diet, stress, and lifestyle. It's practiced by both MDs and other licensed clinicians who've completed additional training.
What the evidence says
Functional medicine is harder to study as a whole because it's a framework, not a single intervention. Some components it emphasizes, like dietary changes, gut health, and stress management, have solid research behind them. A Cleveland Clinic study found functional medicine patients reported better health outcomes than conventional primary care patients, though the study had limitations. The approach is promising, particularly for chronic, complex conditions, but more rigorous clinical trials are needed. Some practitioners also order unnecessary or unvalidated tests, so consumer awareness matters.
What a first session looks like
Expect a very long first appointment, 60-90 minutes is common. You'll go through a detailed life history covering everything from childhood illnesses to current stress levels, diet, sleep, and environment. The practitioner may order comprehensive bloodwork that goes beyond standard panels. Follow-up visits involve reviewing results and building a personalized plan.
Estimated cost
$300-$500 for an initial consultation. Ongoing monthly costs can be significant, especially if extensive testing is ordered. Insurance coverage is inconsistent.
